History Of The Local Area

As part of their Victorian topic, Year 3/ 4 explored local history around that time.  They walked to the Moorfield Mining Colliery memorial where 68 men and boys died following an explosion in 1883.  Two of the youngest victims were 10 years old.  Also at the site is a memorial for Lydia Becker, from Moorside House, for her part in Women’s suffrage.

On route, they visited Altham burial ground, where St. Mary’s Church once stood.  They walked part of the canal opposite where the colliery once stood and imagined barges travelling up and down the Leeds/Liverpool canal.

A good trip!
